Let’s Talk Bookish: June 11th

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky@EternityBooks and Dani @ Literary Lion, where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts.

How do you feel about the “I’m Not Like Other Girls” trope in general?

It gets old…cause usually the “I’m Not Like Other Girls” trope turns into “I’m Gonna Be As Polar Opposite From Other Girls As I Can Possibly Be” trope and THAT gets old too and really never makes any sense. Usually the I’m not like other girls trope turns into characters who place themselves upon a pedestal. They think that not liking things like pink, skirts, or heels makes them unlike other girls and makes them better. They go and force themselves to like things that they don’t truly like, and do things that they don’t think is right to make sure that no one thinks they are like other girls. It also causes the characters to be extremely judgmental. They’ll look at a girl who wanted to curl her hair that day and think she is a stupid, gossiping, air-head for boys kinda girl and place that persons value, or “in-value” on that assumption. They stick every girl ever in a box. UGH! It is so annoying! It really, really gets old!

Have you ever seen the trope done well?

A couple times. However, most of the times it is done write they don’t go and say “I’m Not Like Other Girls”, they don’t immediately judge a girl for liking something that THEY think is stereotypical. Instead they live their lives and know that they are different, and they are fine with that. Some of the best instances are, Anne from Anne of Green Gables, Katniss from The Hunger Games, and Jo March from Little Women.

Did you ever think you were “not like other girls” OR think that a girl you know wasn’t “like other girls”?

I think I am unique, and that every other girl is unique. What bugs me is when people fall too deeply into trends. That is when too many people start looking and acting too alike and don’t embrace they’re uniqueness. I really can’t think of a girl that isn’t “like other girls”. Like, I know a girl who loves both black and pink colors and is fine like that. She loves dressing up, but also like wearing ugly clothes. When people get too caught up in what other people think of them or think too much about themselves, bad things start happening.

Why do you think this trope became so popular?

I’m really not sure…what do y’all think?

Do you think this trope can be damaging?

YES!!!!! Just read my previous rants. 😉

Thanks for reading y’all! What are y’alls’ thoughts on this topic? Let me know. God bless!

Don’t judge someone because they sin differently than you.
